Yangon

Myanmar’s largest city, with 4 million inhabitants, is the former capital Yangon. The city is characterised by numerous golden pagodas and temples, as well as expansive green spaces. In the city centre, which dates back to colonial times, the Inya and the Royal Lake also form part of the cityscape. Yangon quickly evolved into a harbour trade town thanks to its location, but only became the capital in 1885. Since 2010 the newly built Naypyidaw in central Myanmar is the official capital, but Yangon remains the cultural and business centre.

Yangon’s prominence is based mainly on the Shwedagon Pagoda, which, according to legend, was erected 2500 years ago. It counts as one of the most important sanctums in the Buddhist world.
