Taunggyi Balloon Festival
The one-week-long hot air Balloon Festival in Taunggyi near Inle Lake usually takes place in November, depending on the phase of the moon. It is a competition, where groups try to gain points for the flight technique, coordination, form and colour of their huge 3-8m, home-made paper balloons, often in the shape of animals, and to ultimately win the money prize.
The festival is divided into the so-called day balloons and the night balloons competitions, which begin during the day and in the evening respectively. The night balloons are decorated with home-made candle chains, and their launch is often complemented by huge firework displays. The fireworks explode high up in the sky underneath the balloon, making these balloon flights a globally unique spectacle.
We offer 3-4 day travel programmes from and to Yangon or Heho for this festival, which can easily be combined with other travel plans. Taunggyi is very close to Kakku, a fantastic temple complex with hundreds of small, pointed pagodas, and to Inle Lake. A combination with these highlights is optimal.
