Every Burmese boy must spend several weeks in a monastery as a novice at the age of 5-10 years. The initiation of the boys is usually celebrated as a festival for a group of 3-10 novices. Usually you can see processions with the novices, dressed in golden costumes, on horseback or in ox carts, followed by village women carrying offerings. The initiation begins in the early afternoon with a monk shaving the novice’s head and ceremoniously dressing him in a monk’s robe to introduce him to his first prayers. A particularly fascinating experience. There are no set dates for initiation ceremonies, as they take place throughout the year, in every village and town. If you are interested in experiencing one, your guide would be happy to find out whether one is planned anywhere along your travel route.
